The objective of the Foundation ITHACA is to be a cultural bridge for Spanish artists, poets and musicians to other countries and vice versa. The Foundation organized already several cultural activities in Spain: three painting exhibitions, the first by Frans Minnaert, a leading painter from Belgium, the second, an international exhibition with paintings and sculptures: from India: Satish Gupta, from Belgium: Roland Monteyne, Felix Roulin, Yves Rhayé and Frans Minnaert, from Germany: Siegfried Reich an der Stolpe, from England: Allan Smallwood, from Spain: Luis Pla, Riera I Aragó, Ramírez and Fernando de Quiróz, all well known artists. Another exhibition offered paintings from Armenia, Georgia, Hungary and Russia. The exhibitions contained as well music and poetry recitals in several languages.
The Foundacion ITHACA published as well two scores: “Quatre Pieces pour viola et guitare” by the French composer Thierry Laforge and “Dos meditaciones para guitarra” by the Spanish composer Valentín Bielsa, as well as two books:”La jota en la comarca de la Sierra de Segura” and “Cancionero de la Sierra de Segura” by Marina García Jiménez and organized a homage to the late Uruguayan poet Mario Benedetti (21.11 Benidorm) and a concert for clavichord and .baroque guitar by the Consaeptum Duo (18.12 Denia).
The Foundation plans cultural programmes in cooperation with our friends from Romania, Taiwan and Mongolia and will organize this year in Spain in cooperation with POINT Editions and the Licéo Poético de Benidorm “LA COSTA POÉTICA”, an international Poetry Festival, in homage to Miguel Hernández.

Contemporary Poetry from China

AMSTERDAM’S RIVERS

a city at nightfall in November
and nothing but Amsterdam’s rivers
suddenly
the orange on the tree back home
is shaking in the autumn winds
I close the window, but it’s no use
the sun inlaid with pearls has risen
But it’s no use
pigeons flutter like iron filings
streets without boys suddenly seem empty
After the autumn rain
that roof crawling with snails
- my native land
Slowly sailing by on the Amsterdam’s rivers…

ALLEVIATION

Out of my stoneblue eyes
Fall butterflies during the long
Delightful Sunday which God let become,
Since I know him I consider not
Completely inconceivable. At least not one
Made of gold and tissue paper
Still jumps my soul
On fingertips.

An overwhelming success, standing room only.

Pastime

When we were children the elderly were thirty
and a puddle was an ocean
death smooth and simple
did not exist.

later on as youngsters
the elderly were forty
a pond was an ocean
death nothing more than
a word

when we married
the elderly were fifty years old
and a lake was an ocean
death was the death of
the other

now being old
we already give importance to the truth
the ocean finally became the ocean
but death begins to be
our death.

Mario Benedetti (Uruguay)
Tr. Germain Droogenbroodt

I would like
to look at everything from a distance
but with you
*
since biblical times
the sky and the nude
have sinned together
*
only the bat
understands the world
but in reverse

3.47 P.M.

the garden a soup of light and shadow
that disturbs blackbirds, robins
the berries already red and the seasons
out of kilter.
We have grown old here, watching
swallows migrate,
A hidden story in each certain swoop,
waiting
For the droop of bluebells to smother groundswell
under trees.
In unvisited woods the cuckoo reports that spring
has arrived
but there’s little hope of frog spawn with the pond dry
summers
when soft rain refused to fall. How can we even speak
of leaving
with the last of this year’s leaves yet to burn?

True Ithaca

After Cavafiy
Ithaca gave you this wondrous journey

Perhaps Odysseus ruled this island.
Perhaps, in truth, he returned home
and Penelope, faithful, welcomed him
with Telemachus, remaining -¦ and so on.

Yet this Ithaca is just some other place,
not the home of Odysseus - not mine -
though it is the place, by chance, where
we were born - I, Odysseus, whoever.

There is no more whom (or what)
to set off for. And even if I never
return, my home will be
all the places on my way.
And that true Ithaca, in which they'll bury me,
will be the Ithaca that proved me true
