We had a dream...
Cover of the first poetry book published by POINT (1984), poetry from all continents, cover by Frans Minnaert
Twenty-three years ago, in 1984, a group of Flemish poets, translators and a painter met in Belgium and decided to start a cultural foundation, POINT (POetry INTernational). Their aim was: the international promotion of modern art, particularly of poetry and painting, to do something however little, for a more human society, to enter into an international cultural conversation. Twenty-three years later, POINT still exists, translated and published over eighty books of international poetry, all of them with covers of famous painters, organized exhibitions of paintings, poetry and music recitals, organized poetry festivals and cooperated with international poetry festivals …and made cultural bridges with poets, translators, painters, musicians from all continents, including publishing a bimonthly article in Arab and starting from now on with a bimonthly publication on its website of international poetry in Chinese with a board of Chinese advisors from China, from Taiwan and from the Philippines. But there is more. The president of POINT Editions, meanwhile living in Spain and his wife Liliane Leroy have decided to transform their home – since twenty years a meeting point of artists from all over the world – into a cultural foundation, with the name they gave their house: Ithaca. The goal of the foundation is quite similar to the what POINT Editions has been realizing all those years: to be a cultural bridge between poets, painters, musician from all over the world, whatever their faith, culture or race may be, to do something, however little, for a more human world.

THE FIRST PRESS CONFERENCE:
an overwhelming success!

Germain Droogenbroodt (President), Miguel Zaragoza (Councillor of Culture), Vicent Ballester (Guitar player, advisor for Ithaca’s music performances)
More than a dozen Spanish and foreign journalists, radio, TV as well as the Councillor of Culture and the Director of the Cultural Centre of Altea attended the first press conference. Germain Droogenbroodt gave a short introduction about the aims of the foundation, including his wish to organize again an international poetry festival as he had organized before. The Councillor expressed his interest in cooperating with the new foundation, offering the in Altea available spaces for exhibitions, poetry, music, including collaboration with the students and professors of painting from the Miguel Hernández University to have an exhibition of sculptures between the plants in the garden of the ITHACA Foundation. Vicent Ballester, member of the Board, responsible for music performances proposed as one of the first acts of the foundation to publish the score “Quatre Pieces pour Viola et Guitare” by the French composer Thierry Laforge which will be launched at the inauguration of the foundation, together with a new CD guitar music, composed by the Spanish composer Valentín Bielsa.

Since Odysseus (pen name of the former Spectator journalist Germain Droogenbroodt) arrived 1987 at his Ithaca, located in the picturesque artist city of Altea, viewing the Mediterranean Sea, many famous poets and painters undertook a voyage to the Spanish Ithaca. The latest guest of Ithaca and first guest of the recently established foundation was Lyn Coffin, the well known American poet, translator (of Rilke, Achmatova…Germain Droogenbroodt) and playwright.

CONGRATULATIONS
Francisco de Asis Fernández! |
Francisco de Asís Fernández, founder and president of the unequalled Festival Internacional de Poesía de Granada (Nicaragua), has been honoured as Hijo Dilecto de Granada, Nicaragua (Beloved Son of Granada). We wish to congratulate our colleague and friend who realizes year after year the miracle to organize in Nicaragua an international poetry fiesta with over 150 fine poets form all over the globe, converting year after year the picturesque colonial Nicaraguan city in the world’s most fascinating poetry place. His latest collection of poetry, “Orquídeas salvajes” has recently been published by the famous Spanish publisher Visor.
al mar, las nubes de lluvia y el horizonte;

The XXVIII World Congress of Poets is going to be held in Acapulco, México from the 12th to 16th of October 2008 and it is a great honor for us to invite all poets of the world to come with us.
The magnificent natural and cultural patrimony of Mexico identifies us like one of the most attractive tourist destinies. Acapulco is one of the most beautiful places in the world: its diverse landscape, the warm breeze, the exuberant and varied vegetation, the calm sea, its cliffs, the light of its sky, the mysterious daybreaks and sunsets and the natural formation of both of its bays make it a place unique in its genre. All of this, in addition to the celebrities who visit it, and the happy generosity of its inhabitants, has contributed to increase the fame of this beautiful place, of this permanent and ocean blue fiesta.

OUR SELECTED MODERN CHINESE POET
YU Kwang-chung, Taiwan
When I Am Dead
When I am dead, lay me down between the Yangtze
And the Yellow River and pillow my head
On China, white hair against black soil,
Most beautiful O most maternal of lands,
And I will sleep my soundest taking
The whole mainland for my cradle, lulled
By the mother-hum that rises on both sides
From the two great rivers, two long, long songs
That on and on flow forever to the East.
This the world's most indulgent roomiest bed
Where, content, a heart pauses to rest
And recalls how, of a Michigan winter night,
A youth from China used to keep
Intense watch towards the East, trying
To pierce his look through the darkness for the dawn
Of China. So with hungry eyes he devoured
The map, eyes for seventeen years starved
For a glimpse of home, and like a new-weaned child
He drank with one wild gulp rivers and lakes
From the mouth of the Yangtze all the way up
To Poyang and Tungt'ing and to Koko-Nor *.

Time and Eternity
I do not know if time is flame or flow,
I only know through the fingers its drip
Leaves a hand dry and hollow,
Too feeble a fist for a grip.
I only know how often it singes
A brow, how often youthful passion
Leaves a heart scorched with longing
And burned down to a heap of ash
That a new phoenix may break its way
Out, its trembling wings freedom-bound.
Unknown if Eternity is fire or flood
Or neither burns up or whirls around.
